Edited Version of our first video. Kinzie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on Sept. 22, 2010. She is 11 years old. Type 1 diabetes makes up only 5% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes, and usually is diagnosed as a child. It is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States. It is life threatening and untreated/unaware low or high blood glucose can lead to death, organ damage, coma, amputations, heart disease, kidney failure, neuropathy, and retinopathy. It is an autoimmune disease, it isn’t contagious, and you cannot prevent it. In order to live type 1 diabetics have to have insulin injections multiple times a day. A diabetic dog will be able to help Kinzie keep her blood glucose closer to range alerting her long before any electronic device can of changes; preventing death and all other outcomes of extreme high and low blood glucose. A diabetic Alert dog will not only watch over her daily, it will save her life. It will alert her to high and low blood glucose, wake her in her sleep if she has high or low blood glucose to treat and prevent death or coma (if she doesn’t awaken, it will wake another person in the home). Call 911 in case she is alone and unconscious. Fetch glucometer, juice, and life saving glucagon kit to bring to her when she isn’t able to get to it. It will be a constant vigilant companion.
